Why This Project?

Hurricane Irma wiped out much of the fencing in the park in September of 2017.  An auger and rock bit was needed to expedite the rebuilding of the fences in the Buttonwood Campground to allow for the reopening there. At that time, post-Irma, the Friends rented the equipment but the cost to continue to rent the auger and rock bit was out of line with actually purchasing it for long-term use in the park.

Thanks to the supporters of the Friends of Bahia Honda, we were able to purchase the auger and rock bit at a cost of $6,000.

Project Completion and Details

The auger and rock bit were delivered in September 2018.  The fencing was completed in the Buttonwood Campground area and since the time of the purchase over 1,000 feet of mortis fencing and posts have been installed by park personnel throughout Bahia Honda State Park.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
