Loggerhead Beach Plantings

Why This Project?

Hurricane Irma destroyed so much in Bahia Honda State Park.  As the rebuilding of Loggerhead was near completion, it was determined plantings were necessary to repopulate the foliage in many areas.  One such area was near the pedestrian ramp at Loggerhead Beach.

In this case the Friends of Bahia Honda State Park provided the volunteers to handle the plantings in December of 2018, while Key Largo Hammock Nursery donated the plants.

Project Completion and Details

As seen in the after photo, the small plants thrived and have filled in the area, shoring up the dune.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
