Loggerhead Palm Trees

Why This Project?

Hurricane Irma destroyed much of the old growth vegetation along Loggerhead beach, while we have done a few plantings it became evident that larger native trees were needed to help restore that area.

Project Completion and Details

The Friends of Bahia Honda received a generous donation from an environmentally conscious foundation and we purchased the twenty 6’-10’  Sabal palms to help with restoration in that area. Not only is native vegetation beneficial to the flora and fauna in that area, it will also provide some much sought after shade for our visitors. The trees were planted, staked and fenced off in May 2021. Park staff and volunteers have been caring for the new plantings and we look forward to watching them flourish.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
