Sandspur Campground Bee Relocation

Why This Project?

The Friends of Bahia Honda State Park, the parks Citizen Support Organization, funded another very important endeavor at the park this month. In early August park management was walking through the construction site at the Sandspur campground when they noticed some bee activity under the old camper’s bathhouse. Upon further inspection they realized it was a colony of honeybees. They knew the nest would have to be removed for construction to continue. We all know how valuable these pollinators are, so simply removing the nest would not do. Assistant Park Manager, Corliss Castro, contacted local beekeeper Jeff Bennett to inquire about nest relocation. Upon inspection, he said he could successfully remove and relocate the colony.  The Friends of Bahia Honda were more than happy to step up to the plate and fund this project. “We want to BEE everything We can BEE as a Citizen Support Organization” stated Friends President Vicki Weagley. Jeff called on his friend Adrian to assist. Adrian runs Gold Coast Wildlife and is known as The Bearded Beekeeper.

Cost of Bee Keeper

Thanks to the supporters of the Friends of Bahia Honda State Park, we were able to hire local Bee Keeper Jeff Bennett and Adrian of Gold Coast Wildlife.  Total cost to remove and relocate the Bees to Ft. Meyers was $350.

Project Completion and Details

Jeff and Adrian spent about 4 hours removing the nest. They were able to fill 26 hanging combs and retrieve enough honeycomb to yield a gallon or so of honey. Both gentlemen said it was a happy, well fed nest that had likely been there a few years. The colony was relocated to a farm near Ft. Meyers, as all the beekeepers in the Keys were at capacity.
A big thank you to The Friends of Bahia Honda who consistently help the park fulfill its mission to preserve and protect. We couldn’t BEE happier with the end result!
