Calusa Beach 2021

Canopies for Pavilions

Why This Project?

In 2017 Hurricane Irma wiped out the roofs on the pavilions on Calusa Beach, leaving little or no shade for our visitors..

Pavilion Cost

Thanks to the generous supporters of the Friends of Bahia Honda State Park, we were able to fund this $5200 project.

Project Completion and Details

Our park manager, Mark Duncan, was able to design 2 rectangular and 1 right angle sun shades with removable pin mounts, powder-coated aluminum frames and Coolshade plus vinyl laminate type fabric for the pavilions, utilizing the existing columns. In the event of inclement weather, these shades can be removed by park staff and stored for safety. Our park visitors will now be able to enjoy the beauty of Calusa Beach with access to shade in that area of the park.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
