Custom Railing at the Historic Bridge
Why This Project?
Hurricane Irma ripped away the handrails on the north side of the steps accessing the area below the historic railway bridge which leads from Calusa to Loggerhead Beach.
Custom Railing at the Historic Bridge
Thanks to the generous supporters of the Friends of Bahia Honda State Park, we were able to fund this $4800 project.
Project Completion and Details
In December of 2018, the custom railings were completed and installed allowing for safe access to the area for all visitors.
Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park
On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”
Quick History
Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.
Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.
The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
Current Foot Print
Bahia Honda State Park at mile marker 37 in the Florida Keys has become a favorite destination for visitors to our island paradise. The park, encompassing over 500 acres and an offshore island offers some of the best snorkeling and beachcombing in Florida. The perfect and quiet getaway for the entire family.
The concession service provider offers a complete gift shop, snack bar, kayak rentals and daily snorkeling tours to the fabulous Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. The concessions are operated by the Coral Reef Park Co.
