Electrical Project 2020

Why This Project?

Recently The Friends of Bahia Honda funded a project to provide electricity to the Nature Center storage facility and the two pavilions near Calusa Beach. This project provides the park with the ability to store Nature Center displays and historical items in a climate controlled environment. It also provides some much needed lighting inside the shed. The power to the pavilions will allow the park to expand their event space. Annual events like Earth Day were previously confined to the area near the Nature Center. With access to electricity at the pavilions the event can spread out. "Participants like the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute bring touch tanks that require electricity to aerate to the tanks, now we can set them up in a covered pavilion with lots of room." says Park Services Specialist Keely Final. Another benefit for powered pavilions is the ability to host night time events at the park. The possibilities are endless. The electricity will not be accessible at the pavilions during normal operations and will only be turned on for special events.

Project Cost

Thanks to the generous supporters of the Friends of Bahia Honda State Park, we were able to fund this $8,900 project.

Project Completion

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
