Interpretive Display

New Interpretive Display that depicts the wrack line and all the wonders it holds.

Sandspur Beach's newawesome interpretive wrack line display.

The friends of Bahia Honda recently funded a new interpretive display for the park. The display depicts the wrack line and all the wonders it holds. This is the brainchild of volunteer Sam Horak and comes from her love of teaching.

Sam would set up a seaside science display near her camp site to help people understand the importance of the wrack line and all the elements that make up a natural shoreline.

The Friends funded a larger scale display to be shared with all the guests. Since Hurricane Irma shut down the parks nature center in 2017 it is important to find creative ways to teach guests about the park.

The display is located in the Sandspur parking lot near the bathhouse. A great location since Sandspur Beach is the largest stretch of natural shoreline in the Keys.

It was a team effort to complete the $1200.00 project. Volunteers Carl Harris, Kathy Harris, Jay Choutka, Jeanne Choutka, Sam Horak and former Park Services Specialist Keely Final, all worked together on the build, the artistry, and the interpretive displays.

We hope you enjoy it and learn something that helps us all care for our precious shorelines and beaches.

What is a wrack line?

The wrack line is the area on the beach where organic material and other debris is deposited at high tide.

Welcome to Bahia Honda State Park

On the way to Key West, Bahia Honda offers the awestruck traveler the chance to ask “do I need to travel any further?”

Quick History

Henry Flagler’s bold effort to build a railroad to Key West in the early 1900s turned the remote island of Bahia Honda Key into a tropical destination.

Known for its iconic Florida scenery—palm-lined beaches, gin-clear waters and magnificent sunsets—visitors to the park enjoy balmy sea breezes that caress the shores year-round. Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented and boat trips to the reef for snorkeling excursions are available.

The park is also an excellent place to observe wading birds and shorebirds, while the Sand and Sea Nature Center introduces nature lovers to the island’s plants and animals.
